MANILA — The Bureau of Immigration on Wednesday raised concerns that the recently raided wellness clinic related to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations in Pasay City supposedly handles abortion cases.

Immigration and Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) officers arrested 3 Vietnamese and 2 Chinese nationals working in the clinic, BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval said during the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum.

"What the alarming thing is, kasi ang initial look nila is cosmetics and beautification because it’s a wellness clinic but reports that the PAOCC and the BI received were medyo scary already because they were involved in abortion, they were allegedly involved in abortion practices," Sandoval said.

Sandoval said that the clinic has no permit and the workers have no work visas.

"They do not have anything. Essentially, it’s an underground clinic that they’ve been doing," Sandoval said.

CHINESE STUDENTS IN CAGAYAN

Meanwhile, Sandoval said there are only 96 Chinese students in Cagayan despite the more than 1,500 student visas granted to Chinese nationals because most of them are in blended learning mode.

"So they went here, they applied for their visas...they started the program and they flew back to China to continue their lessons online. They just go here if they need to defend their thesis," Sandoval said.

Sandoval said a high-level meeting on Monday by the Inter-Agency Committee on Foreign Students found that the Chinese learners underwent proper procedures in obtaining their visas.

The meeting that BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco requested was also attended by officials of the Commission on Higher Education, the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency, and the National Bureau of Immigration.

"The concerns also raised, at nilinaw po noong inter-agency sa pagpupulong na tama naman po iyong mga proseso na pinagdaanan ng mga foreign nationals but in case po na may mga concerns on national security then the NBI the NICA can raise it to the inter-agency can elevate it po sa mga members sa inter-agency so appropriate action can be done," Sandoval said.

Sandoval said they have also forwarded data on foreign students to the NICA as a proactive measure.
