MANILA — The closure of the EDSA-Kamuning Flyover southbound began on Wednesday to facilitate retrofitting works.

Only buses using the EDSA bus carousel are permitted to pass through the flyover during this period.

While traffic congestion and slow-moving vehicles were observed near the vicinity of EDSA southbound corner Scout Borromeo Street, traffic flow resumed smoothly after passing the traffic light at EDSA corner Kamuning.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) advised motorists to consider alternative routes and utilize the Mabuhay Lanes, including Scout Borromeo, Scout Albano, Panay Avenue, West Avenue, and Mother Ignacia Avenue.

"Nakatulong po ‘yung holiday kasi kakaunti po ‘yung mga byahero... Mabuhay lane hindi naman po masyadong bumabara dahil nakatulong po ‘yung previous na pag-o-operate ng ating operation about du’n sa mga naka-illegal park," said MDDA Traffic Aide Michael Arcilla.

(The holiday has been beneficial because there are fewer commuters... The Mabuhay lane is not causing significant congestion because our previous operations against illegal parking have been effective.)

Reynaldo Ramos, a motorist, said he found traversing the area difficult.

"Naku sobrang hirap po ngayon dito dumaan, galing pa po kaming probinsya di namin inakala na ganito.... Nabalitaan namin pero hindi alam na ngayong araw ‘yung closure niya," he said.

(It's really difficult passing through here right now, especially since we came from the province. We didn't expect it to be like this... We heard about it, but we didn't know that today was the closure.)

Additionally, one lane on Scout Borromeo Street has been closed, rendering it one-way to facilitate smoother traffic flow.

"Sinarado po ‘yung isang lane doon para po mabigyang daan yung ating pakanan kasi kung ‘di siya nakasarado magko-cause po siya ng trouble magsasalubong po," Arcilla said.

(We closed one lane there to give way to right-turning vehicles because if it remained open, it could cause traffic conflicts.)

Traffic enforcers were also deployed along the alternate routes to guide the affected motorists.

The retrofitting works are expected to last for six months before the EDSA Kamuning Flyover reopens to motorists.
