MANILA — Former Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice on Thursday filed a petition for certiorari with a prayer for temporary restraining order (TRO) against the contract entered into by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) with Miru Systems for the 2025 automated elections.

Erice said there were irregularities in the procurement process as he also stressed that Miru would use prototype machines, in violation of the automated elections law.

“This is robbery in progress,” said Erice.

Erice noted that as a former lawmaker, he had conducted hearings on elections, which has become his "passion."

On Wednesday, the SC ruled that Comelec committed grave abuse of discretion when it disqualified longtime contractor Smartmatic from bidding in all future Philippine elections.

But the SC, citing practicality, did not nullify Comelec's contract with Miru for next year's midterm polls.

Erice said the SC decision released Wednesday was "coincidental" as they have prepared the petition two to three weeks ago.

However, he believes that the Smartmatic machines used in the previous elections are still serviceable and covered with warranty until November this year.

Erice also said he might file an impeachment complaint against some Comelec officials over the Miru contract.
