MANILA -- Senate Committee on Basic Education Chairman Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian on Wednesday recommended that the Department of Education (DepEd) "decentralize" its hiring process to help address delays in filling up teacher positions in various schools.

“It takes 4 to 6 months to hire one teacher because it goes through the CSC [Civil Service Commission],” he said at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay Forum.

“We are now recommending to DepEd to decentralize the hiring of teachers so that they can hire faster. DepEd earlier admitted that the teacher shortage in the country has reached 58,000.

Sen. Gatchalian, however, told DepEd to address first the delay in the hiring process so that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) may start considering increasing the teaching positions.
