Quiboloy accuses alleged rape victims of 'Potiphar's wife syndrome'

Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, founder of the Davao-based Kingdom of Jesus Christ, denied Wednesday allegations that he sexually abused female personal assistants or "pastorals", saying the women made up the accusations because he rejected them.

In a Facebook video, Quiboloy, who calls himself the Appointed Son of God, said many women have desired him because he is single and God made him rich.

He said the women were suffering "Potiphar's wife syndrome."

"Ako po ay hindi nag-asawa. Ngayon inaakusahan ako ng napakaraming babae. Eto po ang kasalanan ko. Pinayaman ako ng Panginoon. Akala nila sa akin, single ako, kaya pinag-aagawan ako. Pagkatapos na ako'y maghihinde, mapapahiya, ibabaliktad nila sa akin. 'Yan ang tinatawag kong Potiphar's wife syndrome," he said.

In the Book of Genesis, Joseph, son of Jacob, is sold into slavery by his brothers and ends up in the household of Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh's guard. In the story, Potiphar's wife accused Joseph of raping her after he refused her sexual advances, which lands Joseph in prison.

In the video, Quiboloy said he did not want to talk about the allegations earlier because the women would be humiliated.

"Nag-aagawan sila. Mahirap man sabihin, pinag-aagawan nila ako dahil nanawag sa mga magulang; 'Yayaman na tayo, Ma, pag nangyari ito.' Sabi ko hindi mangyayari 'yan dahil dedicated ako."

"Napahiya, nabayaran, ngayon binabaliktad lahat ng storya," he said of his accusers.

Several ex-KOJC pastorals earlier testified before the Senate of how they were forced to have sex with Quiboloy. At least one resource person said she was a minor when forced to have sex with the pastor.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation earlier placed Quiboloy on its most wanted list due to allegations of "conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion and sex trafficking of children; sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion; conspiracy; bulk cash smuggling."

"Apollo Carreon Quiboloy, the founder of a Philippines-based church, is wanted for his alleged participation in a labor trafficking scheme that brought church members to the United States, via fraudulently obtained visas, and forced the members to solicit donations for a bogus charity, donations that actually were used to finance church operations and the lavish lifestyles of its leaders," the FBI said in its website.

"Furthermore, it is alleged that females were recruited to work as personal assistants, or 'pastorals,' for Quiboloy and that victims prepared his meals, cleaned his residences, gave him massages and were required to have sex with Quiboloy in what the pastorals called 'night duty'."

FORCED TO SOLICIT

In the video, Quiboloy also defended allegations that KOJC members were forced to sell goods or even beg for money to raise money for the church.

While not denying that members are asked to solicit, Quiboloy said the money is used for humanitarian efforts including feeding young people who he said are being neglected by politicians.

"Ni singko wala kaming ninanakaw. 'Yung mga volunteers ko walang sweldo," he said.

Quiboloy said he has been demonized and his reputation destroyed just because he is a friend of the Dutertes who are also from Davao.

“Hindi ko naman kasalanan ako ay maging kaibigan ng politikong tulad ni Pangulong Duterte, Vice President Sara. Taga-Davao po kaming lahat. Lumaki kaming lahat dito. Alam ko po ang aking mga kaibigan sila. Lumaki kami, mayor namin ‘yan, prosecutor pa. Naging congressman, naging president.”

“‘Yan po ang aking pakikipag-ugnayan for nation building. Wala akong ibang interes sa bansang ito kundi pag-unlad. Ngayon, ako po ay inuusig. Ako po ay ginigipit. At ako po ay sinasaktan sa lahat ng paraan, ng mga false accusations, false allegations na ayaw naman nilang pumunta sa korte,” he said.

He also accused foreign intelligence agencies of an alleged plot to either kidnap or kill him.

"Hindi ako drug lord. Ni minsan hindi ako nakatikim ng droga. Mulang-mula pa noong inalay ako ng akong ama namaging isang ministro ng banal na kasulatan hanggang ako'y lumaki, hanggang ako'y maging 74 years old, hindi ko po na-enjoy ang aking kabataan sapagka't ako'y hindi nagliwaliw. Ako po'y nangaral. 50 years na akong nangangaral, 38 years sa Kingdom ministry ni isang sigarilyo hindi tumama sa bibig ko. Ni maliit na bisyo hindi ko pinasok," he said.
