MANILA (UPDATE) — Tropical Storm Marce (international name: Yinxing) could strengthen into a typhoon this week when it reaches the waters of northern Luzon, an area still reeling from the effects of the recent Super Typhoon Leon.

Tropical Storm Marce is threatening almost the same area where Leon left damage and forced thousands to flee their houses. Leon arrived soon after Severe Tropical Storm Kristine struck Luzon and Visayas provinces last month.

In its 5 p.m. Monday weather bulletin, state weather bureau PAGASA said Marce intensified further as it it moves over the Philippine Sea at 30 kilometers per hour.

It was last spotted 740 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, blowing winds of 85 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 105 km/h.

Because Tropical Storm Marce is still far from the Philippines, PAGASA said it could begin raising wind signals by Tuesday, adding that Wind Signal No. 4 may be the highest alert hoisted during the passage of the cyclone.

PAGASA said Tropical Storm Marce is forecast to enhance the northeasterly wind flow, which could bring rains over extreme northern Luzon and the eastern section of Luzon beginning Monday or Tuesday.

The tropical cyclone could also spawn rough seas and strong to gale-force gusts over northern Luzon's coastal waters, the state forecaster warned.

Based on PAGASA's forecast track, Tropical Storm Marce could intensify to a severe tropical storm by Monday night or Tueday morning and reach typhoon strength by Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, with "rapid intensification" likely.

Marce is predicted to make landfall in the vicinity of Babuyan Islands or mainland northern Cagayan on Thursday evening or Friday early morning.

However, due to uncertainty in the strength of the high-pressure area north of Marce, PAGASA said the forecast track could still change and bring the landfall point to the mainland Cagayan-Isabela area.

Tropical Storm Marce is the Philippines' 13th tropical cyclone this year, entering the Philippine area of responsibility early Monday after back-to-back storms recently hit the nation.
