MANILA – Damage to schools and education infrastructure nationwide due to Severe Tropical Storm Kristine has reached P3.7 billion, the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Tuesday, with the agency vowing to provide swift action to students and teachers affected by the storm.

In a statement, DepEd said it already “mobilized rapid response efforts” to help respond to the needs of students and teachers after Kristine’s impact.

“Every day out of school is a lost opportunity to learn… That is why we are prioritizing rehabilitation efforts to restore normalcy in the education system as quickly as possible,” said Education Secretary Sonny Angara.

Based on the agency’s estimates, infrastructure damage in schools already reached P3.7 billion  – P2.9 billion of which were needed for reconstruction and P737.5 million for major repairs.

DepEd also launched a comprehensive recovery plan aimed at helping students resume learning “without further delay.”

This includes replacement of damaged learning resources such as textbooks, learning tools, equipment, and computer packages, and additional  Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) to its regional offices, Schools Division Offices (SDOs), and schools.

Aside from this, DepeD said it would reproduce additional printed self-learning modules and setting up of temporary learning spaces.

Kristine and Severe Tropical Storm Leon have affected 1.79 million families or 7.13 million individuals in 10,181 barangays nationwide, with 125 people reported dead.

More than 935,000 people have been displaced by the storms, the NDRRMC said.

The NDRRMC also monitored 756 flooded areas in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Soccsksargen, Caraga, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and Metro Manila.
