MANILA – Typhoon Julian left one individual missing and eight others injured in northern Luzon, the disaster monitoring council said on Wednesday.

In its 8 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said a 38-year-old male went missing in Barangay Cabcaborao, San Juan town in Abra after allegedly being swept away by strong currents along the Tineg River, according to local police.

Eight people were injured in Basco, Batanes.

According to the NDRRMC, a total of 43,093 families, or 149,293 persons, in the Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, and Cordillera regions were affected by the country’s tenth typhoon this year.

Of these, 646 families, or 2,176 persons, were served in 58 evacuation centers, while 921 families, or 3,255 individuals, sought shelter elsewhere.

At least 88 houses were damaged in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Cagayan, Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, and Mountain Province.

WHERE IS JULIAN?

Julian was moving slowly towards Taiwan on Wednesday morning.

Signal No. 1 remained up in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, northwestern Cagayan, and northern and western Ilocos Norte.

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Julian was located 265 kilometers west northwest of Itbayat, Batanes outside the Philippine area of responsibility. It was packing winds of 165 kilometers per hour with up to 205 kph gusts,

Batanes and Babuyan may still experience moderate to heavy rains with gusty winds.

Julian has been gradually weakening due to the entry of dry air and the upwelling of cooler ocean waters caused by its very slow movement.

It may re-enter PAR on Wednesday evening and make landfall over southwestern Taiwan.

Interaction with the mountainous land mass will cause further deterioration of the storm and erratic movement.

It will eventually exit PAR through the Taiwan Strait on Friday evening or Saturday morning and eventually weaken into a low pressure area.
