MANILA—The head of the Department of Education is calling for a review of the laws on school bullying, including the sanctions that schools can impose on erring students.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones was reacting to the decision of the Ateneo de Manila University to "dismiss" a student who was caught on video while bullying a schoolmate.

Ateneo president Jose Ramon Villarin said the child's dismissal meant that he can no longer study in Ateneo.

"Dismissal is a solution for the school dahil wala na sa kanilang teritoryo. Pero it's not a solution for the children and it's not a solution for the problem of bullying in itself," Briones said in an interview on DZMM Teleradyo.

She said that victims may still bear trauma from the incident, while the bully could remain unchanged in his ways.

Briones added that the current law allows schools to expel an erring student. She said this punishment may be extreme as it means the said student can no longer be admitted to any school.

"We have to review the law. Kailangan mag-harmonize ang dalawa, 'yung law natin at tsaka 'yung policy namin na child protection," she said.

Then at the same time, hindi naku-compromise ‘yung lasa ng sinigang,” pagbabahagi niya kay Migs Bustos para sa programang “My Puhunan: Kaya Mo!”.

So hayun, unti-unti natutunan ko.
