MANILA—The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Saturday reminded the public to protect the privacy of children amid the recent bullying incident at the Ateneo Junior High School.

The commission released an advisory on the issue of bullying and cited the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which ensures the protection of children and care for their well-being.

"It is imperative that the right to privacy and confidentiality of all children involved must always be protected, not only by the school administrators, the parents, other parties concerned, the media, as well as users of social networks," it said.

It also cited the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013, which mandates schools to address bullying in their premises.

The CHR said intervention of school officials is "needed to adequately address, and if possible, to eliminate the same."

"Being the primary institution mandated by law to protect and educate the children in any forms of bullying, the school holds vital role to enforce the provision so of the said law," it said.

"Further, if continuous education, support, program and intervention will be made by the school officials regarding the bullying as mandated by the law, the same will effectively reduce, if not eliminate, bullying cases even outside the school premises."

The Ateneo de Manila University has said an investigation is ongoing and that it will decided on the case the "soonest."

University president Fr. Jose Villarin earlier said the school "will not hesitate to impose the penalty of dismissal or even expulsion in cases of grave misconduct."

Meanwhile, the parents of the bullied student have filed a blotter report, police said Friday.
