MANILA — The provincial government of Catanduanes declared a state of calamity due to typhoon Tisoy, which flattened flimsy homes and forced tens of thousands into evacuation centers in parts of Luzon last week, an official said Monday.
Tisoy left some P229.7 million worth of damage to agriculture and P17 million of damage in infrastructure in Catanduanes, Luzon's easternmost island, authorities earlier said.
The provincial council approved a recommendation to place Catanduanes under a state of calamity, which would allow the local government to tap emergency funds and impose a prize freeze on basic goods, confirmed Acting Governor Shirley Abundo.
A 71-year-old man in Panganiban, Catanduanes died last week due to head injury after he was swept by Tisoy's fierce winds outside an evacuation center.

Tisoy also left 13 Catanduanes residents injured, officials said.
