MANILA - The lighting ceremony of the 30th Southeast Asian Games was pre-recorded, the show's creative director confirmed Tuesday.

SEA Games organizers had earlier sidestepped claims that the cauldron lighting was not live but pre-recorded.

Floy Quintos said the team had to prepare for the inclement weather. Typhoon Tisoy, a powerful storm that devastated southern Luzon, has prompted organizers to reschedule some outdoor sports events due to bad weather.

"We were working with a Filipino and foreign team and we were all in agreement that no one can tell what the weather will be like. It’s a creative solution," he told ANC's Early Edition.

"Given the month it was happening, the original idea was to beam it. But anything could happen, at times like that you err on being sigurista. If it can happen live, why not but the storm is coming, we don’t know what the weather could be like."

Quintos said they were only doing their jobs as show creators.

"I think people are angry and concerned about it (cauldron) and rightly they should be. But as creators, our job really is to make sure nothing goes wrong," he said.

The P50 million worth of cauldron used for the lighting ceremony has earned the ire of critics, with Sen. Franklin Drilon saying it was "extravagant" and could have been used to build 50 classrooms.

President Rodrigo Duterte, however, said the cauldron's price was justified because it is a work of art.
