MANILA (UPDATED) - The vice mayor of Datu Saudi-Ampatuan, Maguindanao was killed by unidentified gunmen inside his house on Sunday morning.

Initial police reports said an unknown number of suspects entered the house of Vice Mayor Anwar Sindatuk in Barangay Madia at 8:20 a.m.

A village official later told ABS-CBN News that a multi-cab parked outside Sindatuk's house before two men disembarked from the vehicle, talked with the vice mayor and shot him dead.

The official said the victim's family may have known the gunmen's identity.

"Pag-alis nung nag-serve ng kape na escort, doon na binaril si vice. Kilala ito sila ni vice, pero sa pamilya hindi pa muna sila magsabi kung sino ito dahil ipaubaya na nila sa PNP," he said.

A 58-year-old woman was hit by a stray bullet during the incident.

Police said they are looking into "rido" or family feud as the motive in the killing.

Military tanks and trucks have been deployed in the area to secure the mayor's family and community.

Sindatuk was elected as the town's first municipal councilor in the May elections but assumed the post of vice mayor in October when Mayor Samsudin Dimaukom and nine others were killed in an alleged firefight with police.

The post of Dimaukom, who was earlier tagged as a narco-politician by President Rodrigo Duterte, was assumed by his wife, then Vice Mayor Bai Anida, based on the law of succession.

Sindatuk will be buried immediately on Sunday in accordance with Islamic tradition. -- Report from Lore Mae Andong, ABS-CBN News
