MANILA - Fraternity members who committed criminal acts during a brawl in University of the Philippines Diliman will face charges and possible expulsion, the school's chancellor said Thursday.

Members of the Upsilon Sigma Phi and Alpha Phi Beta were allegedly involved in two "violent" incidents earlier this week, but the cause of the incidents has yet to be determined.

"The incidents are being investigated and charges will be filed against those found to be criminally liable," UP Chancellor Michael Tan said in a statement.

"The penalties for violence are severe, and can include expulsion from the university," he said.

The school is also investigating who leaked the CCTV footage that shows several students involved in the on-campus brawl.

A "truce" between the 2 fraternities has been called with the help of their alumni, Tan said.

"We thank these alumni, with hopes that the truce will hold," he said.

Tan called the incident "ironic" as it took place on the same day the UP community celebrated the entry of its men's (seniors) basketball team in the UAAP Final Four for the first time in 21 years.

"This victory would not have been possible without the widespread support of all sectors, most especially Nowheretogobutup, an alumni group where Upsilon Sigma Phi, Alpha Phi Beta and all the other fraternities of UP Diliman have been key players, working together to support our athletes," he said.
