MANILA - (UPDATED) A magnitude 4.8 earthquake rocked Iloilo and nearby areas on Monday morning, PHIVOLCS said.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, struck 5 kilometers northwest of Guimbal town in Iloilo at around 10:54 a.m., PHIVOLCS said.

Because of the tremor, a portion of the ceiling of a classroom at the Igcocolo Elementary School in Guimbal fell. A student there reportedly sustained a minor abrasion, a teacher said.

People in schools, hospitals and other buildings in Guimbal, Iloilo City and nearby areas where the quake was felt were also evacuated during the quake.
