MANILA - The Philippines is ready to deploy Army troops, Davao’s disaster response teams and other emergency responders to aid typhoon victims in Japan, Senator Bong Go said Tuesday, citing directives from Malacañang.

Go offered the assistance to Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koji Haneda in a letter, a week after Typhoon Hagibis killed at least 83 people in the East Asian country, with more than half of the deaths occurring in northeastern Japan.

"As instructed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, I would like to convey the Philippines’ readiness to provide assistance to the Government of Japan,” Go said in the undated letter.

"Our first responders including those from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Davao City Risk Reduction and Management Council - Response Cluster Team and other Philippine relief organizations stand ready for deployment to help in your disaster relief and recovery efforts,” he said.

At least 100,000 rescuers have been clawing through debris in different parts of Japan, including its capital Tokyo, in search of survivors trapped in landslides.

Duterte arrived in Tokyo, Tuesday morning, to take part in the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Naruhito.

Japan is the Philippines’ top source of development assistance funds, and Manila’s second largest trading partner next to Beijing.
