MANILA - There could be a Cayetano husband-wife tandem in the House of Representatives after next year's elections.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano confirmed Wednesday that like him, his wife Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano, will run for Congress, too.

"Kailangan ko po kasi talaga ng aside from adviser at kasama at kailangan ko rin po ng boto niya, so magtatakbo rin po siya ng Congress doon po sa kabilang distrito," he told radio DZMM.

(Aside from being an adviser and partner, I need her vote so she will also run for Congress in the neighboring district.)

The mayor will gun for a seat in Taguig's second district currently occupied by her sister-in-law, Rep. Pia Cayetano, who is seeking a comeback in the Senate, said Alan.

Meanwhile, Alan will run in the Taguig-Pateros district. If he is elected, he said he will aim to become House Speaker in the 18th Congress, replacing Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who will retire then.

DUTERTE BACKING

Alan said President Rodrigo Duterte supports his bid for the House Speakership, which will solidify support for administration-backed measures like federalism and granting more economic powers to regions.

"Noong nag-heart-to-heart tayo ng Pangulo, we realized that iyung mga systemic changes, iyung mga mabibigat na pagbabago, kailangan ng tulong-tulong na liderato sa House of Representatives," he said.

"Sabi niya, full support to run for Congress, Taguig-Pateros, then to run for Speaker."

(We had a heart-to-heart talk with the President and we realized that the systematic changes we want, the radical changes, need the solid support of the House of Representatives' leadership. He said he will give full support for me to run for Congress in the Taguig-Pateros district, then to run for Speaker.)

Permanent Representative to the United Nations Teddy Boy Locsin, Jr. will replace Alan as Foreign Affairs Secretary.

Alan's brother Lino Cayetano, meanwhile, will run as Lani's successor.
