MANILA - Retired police Chief Supt. Elmer Jamias said Sunday that he will run for vice mayor in the capital.

Jamias told reporters that some candidates for mayor offered to be his running mate, but he has chosen to be an independent bet.

The former head of the Eastern Police District said he will prioritize sanitation and curbing corruption.

"Lilinisin ko ang Maynila, pati city hall," he said.

Jamias' anti-crime exploits as a policeman inspired the 2000 biopic "Barako ng Maynila", in which the titular role was played by former Senator Jinggoy Estrada.

The burly officer made headlines in 2015 when he was allegedly threatened and berated by then Vice President Jejomar Binay as he led the serving of the arrest warrant against the latter's son, then Makati Mayor Jun-jun Binay.

Among those he may face in next year's vice-mayoral race is Social Welfare Undersecretary Isko Moreno.
