MANILA – After six controversial hearings, the Senate committee on justice concluded Thursday its investigation into the mounting body pile amid government’s war on drugs.

Panel chairman, Senator Richard “Dick” Gordon said lawmakers will now focus on creating laws aimed at preventing law enforcers and vigilante groups from abusing the drug war to push their own agenda.

“Ang mangyayari na lang ngayon, humanap tayo ng solusyon para matanggal natin ang pagkakataon na pag-abuso ng mga kriminal sa ating batas [What will happen now is that we’ll find solutions to remove the opportunity of criminals to abuse our laws] – whether they’re in uniform or not,” he said.

Gordon said the panel’s report may be released Monday, so that the public “will be assuaged that we are all watching out for each other here.”

The investigation was initiated by Opposition Senator Leila de Lima, who had lined up a string of witnesses to alleged police abuses in the drug war.

De Lima also presented witness Edgar Matobato, a self-confessed hitman who tagged President Duterte in vigilante killings in Davao, before she was ousted as the inquiry’s leading investigator and succeeded by Gordon.

After this, the two senators butted heads several times over a kidnapping case against Matobato, and again on Thursday after De Lima opposed Gordon’s push to shift the focus of the hearing to the death penalty bill.
