Pilipinas maaaring maging 'aging society': population commission

Nagbabadyang maituring na aging society o bayan ng matatanda ang Pilipinas pagsapit ng 2030 dahil sa pagtaas ng bilang ng mga senior citizen, sabi ng Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM).

Tinatawag na aging society ang isang bansa kung 10 porsiyento ng populasyon nito ay edad 60 pataas at sa taya ng POPCOM ay posibleng umabot pa ng 11 porsiyento ang mga senior citizen sa bansa pagdating ng 2030.

Sa ngayon, 1 sa bawat 10 Pilipino ay senior citizen pero may growth rate o bilis ng pagdami itong nasa 3.5 porsiyento, ayon sa komisyon.

Ayon kay dating POPCOM Executive Director Juan Antonio Perez III, ngayon pa lang ay dapat kumilos na ang pamahalaan sa mga nagbabadyang problema sa pagtatapos ng dekada.

Kailangan umanong palakasin ang health at social services.

"Magiging malaki ang problema natin hindi lamang sa bilang, kundi sa kalusugan at pang-ekonomiyang kalagayan ng ating katandaan na Pilipino," ani Perez.

"We have to develop programs that will make them a part of their productive population. We must care for our older populations in a manner that is recognizing their rights and also giving them opportunities for them to be part of society," dagdag niya.

Ayon sa POPCOM, kalahati sa 9 milyong senior citizen ay nagtatrabaho pa rin pero hindi dahil gusto nila kundi kinakailangan.

"Dahil hindi maganda ang kanilang economic situation. Madalas sinasabi nila, hindi nila nami-meet ang household needs," ani Perez.

Suportado naman ng National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) ang productive aging, kung saan maaari pa ring maging bahagi ng nation-building ang matatanda kaya kailangang matiyak ang kanilang malakas na pangangatawan.

"'Pag hindi tayo naghanda, at hindi natin binibigyang pansin ang senior citizens, then not only will our government resources be drained and heavily burdened by the number of seniors," ani NCSC Chairman Franklin Quijano.

Mahalaga umanong magkaroon ng magandang health profile ang mga matatanda, kung saan magkakaroon ng datos sa kalusugan at kakayahan nila.
