A former vice mayor of Amulung, Cagayan was killed in an ambush early Wednesday morning.

Alexander Pascual came from a fiesta celebration and was on his way home when unidentified assailants shot him past 6 a.m. in Barangay Carig, Tuguegarao City.

Senior Insp. Alexander Tamang of Tuguegarao City Police Station said the victim managed to continue driving his motorcycle for several meters until he crashed outside the Hall of Justice.

Police are now looking for a footage from a closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) that could help identify the gunmen who were on board a sports utility vehicle (SUV).

"Tinitingnan namin ngayon ay pulitika at posible din ang love triangle," the investigation section head said on the possible motive of the attack, but he didn't elaborate further.

Meanwhile, Pascual's brother Angelito told ABS-CBN News the victim didn't receive any death threats.

"Mabait siya. Hindi siya nagtatanim ng galit," he said.

Pascual served as vice mayor from 2013 to 2016. He ran for mayor in the 2016 elections, but lost. - report from Danielle Rebollos, ABS-CBN News
