MANILA (UPDATED) - Typhoon Queenie (international name: Kong-rey) has intensified into a supertyphoon, the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) said Tuesday.

It was packing 259.28 kilometers per hour (kph) maximum sustained winds and gusts reaching 314.84 kph, according to one-minute readings made by the U.S. Navy-Air Force command based in Hawaii.

State weather bureau PAGASA, however, said the storm was only packing maximum sustained winds of 200 kph with gusts of up to 245 kph.

The JTWC classification is based on 1-minute instrumental readings. PAGASA has lower figures because it uses 10-minute readings similar to the standard used by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

As of 10 p.m., Queenie was located 1,000 kms east of Calayan, Cagayan, according to PAGASA.

It was not expected to make landfall and was forecast to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Friday if it continues to move northwest at 20 kph.

Kong-rey is the fifth Category 5 typhoon this year after Maria (local name: Gardo), Jebi (Maymay), Mangkhut (Ompong), and Trami (Paeng).
