MANILA - Tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 was raised over the areas of Batanes and Babuyan Islands on Saturday as tropical storm Onyok slightly intensified, the state weather bureau said.

In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said winds of 30 to 60 kilometers per hour (kph) may be expected in Batanes and Babuyan Islands.

Onyok was spotted 890 kms east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan while packing maximum sustained winds of up to 75 kph near the center and 90 kph gusts, as it moved northwest at 35 kph.

The weather disturbance is less likely to make landfall in the country throughout the forecast period, said PAGASA. However, it reportedly may intensify into a severe tropical storm within 24 hours.

PAGASA said sea travel is risky, especially for small seacraft, over seaboards under the wind signal due to potentially rough sea conditions.
