MANILA - The brother of Cadet 4th Class Darwin Dormitorio on Saturday said the Philippine Military Academy failed to inform the family of their loved one's earlier hospital confinement and checks, as they cried for justice for his death allegedly due to hazing.

Detailing his brother's afflictions that eventually took his life, Dormitorio's elder sibling Dexter said the family did not know about the cadet's three hospitalizations before his death on Sept. 18.

"Sa tatlong beses na nospital siya ni isang beses po hindi kami ininform ng PMA," said Dexter Dormitorio.

(In the three times he was brought to hospital, not once were we informed by the PMA.)

He said their parents should have been apprised of his brother's condition and the treatment he needed.

"Ang PMA po hinihiram lang po nila 'yung buhay ng kadete. Ultimately po ang may desisyon d'yan kung anong mangyayari sa kaniya, paano 'yung treatment na gusto nila, sa magulang pa rin po," Dexter said.

(The PMA only borrows a cadet's life. Ultimately, the one who should make the decision on what should happen to him, the treatment they want, it's up to the parents.)

"Kahit sabihin nilang hindi na siya makakabalik (PMA) dito, that is a risk the parents are willing to take kasi mas mahalaga po 'yung buhay nung bata," he said.

(Even if it meant not being able to go back to the PMA, that is a risk the parents are willing to take because the life of the boy is more important.)

Dexter said the PMA kept them in the dark about his brother's condition and only received two texts from them in the entire course of his training. One was about Dexter making it to the cadet corps and the other one about "an unfavorable incident."

Dexter said his brother was first confined at the PMA hospital from Aug. 20 to 27 after complaining of chest contusion. He was brought back to the hospital on Sept. 6 for the same complaint.

"And then nagreklamo siya na masakit tiyan niya on the (Sept.) 17th tapos iaano mo UTI?" he said.

(And then he complained of stomach pain on the 17th and you say it's UTI?)

He last saw his brother alive when he visited him on August 25 while in hospital.

"Hindi po siya nagsabi na may hazing na nangyari. Ang sinabi lang po niya sa akin nabagsakan siya ng bunkmate niya during nung wakeup call. He stood by his word na bawal siyang mag-squeal," he said.

(He did not say there was hazing. What he said was his bunkmate fell on him during the wakeup call. He stood by his word that he cannot squeal.)

He also cited how after news about his brother's death broke, three cadets suspected to have injuries due to hazing were brought to hospitals outside premier military school.

"Kung napansin n'yo po may dinala sa St. Luke's na isang kadete, ibig pong sabihin nun critical 'yung kundisyon, parang pag-admit na rin nila na 'yung dalawang ospital nila 'yung sa PMA at sa V. Luna hindi kaya ang mga ganung kaso," he said.

(If you notice one cadet was brought to St. Luke's which means his condition is critical, it's like they admit that the PMA and V. Luna hospitals can't handle that kind of case.)

Dexter said his brother joined the PMA to follow in their father's footstep. He aspired to be an Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff someday. Even before entering PMA, Dormitorio trained in military drills under his father, who was an Army colonel.

"Ang hindi lang po napaghandaan dito, at hinding-hindi mo talaga din paghahandaan is bubugbugin ka araw-araw, kukuryentehin ka pa po tapos fatal na po 'yung paggawa sa'yo nun," he said.

(What you can't prepare for is getting a beating every day, being electrocuted, and that becomes fatal.)

Dexter said he has his brother's journal that detailed everything.

"Nilalagay niya rin na na-endorse siya ngayong araw, ibig sabihin i-endorse ka ng upperclass mo papunta doon sa mga 3rd class para turuan ka ng leksiyon. Mayroon po doon lumalabas na madalas nga po," he said.

(It says there which days he was endorsed by his upperclass to the 3rd class to teach you a lesson. It appears that happened often.)

BEAT TO DEATH

Based on autopsy report, Dexter said his brother suffered damage incurred over time.

"Durog 'yung pancreas niya, durog 'yung kidneys niya, kinuryente rin po siya doon. 'Yung large intestines niya connecting sa skin napunit po 'yung around 4 to 5 inches so grabe 'yung pagdudugo nun. Mayroon din siya mga latay sa ribs na pinalo ng manipis na tubo," he said.

(His pancreas was shattered, his kidneys were shattered, he was also electrocuted there... His large intestines were torn by around 4 to 5 inches so his bleeding was severe... He also had lashes on his ribs that was hit by a thin pipe.)

The family is just waiting for the police report which they said they would review first before filing appropriate charges.

"Hindi po kami titigil hangga't hindi namin nakukuha 'yung hustisya," he said.

(We will not stop until we get justice.)

He thanked the public for an outpour of support on social media and for sharing awareness on what had happened to his brother.

"Nananawagan po ako ng suporta at panalangin at sana po 'wag nating hayaan mamatay 'yung isyu porke't natapos na, na file na 'yung kaso, kasi hindi lang naman po ito sa kapatid ko, para po ito sa future kadete na gustong pumasok sa PMA, sa PNPA, sa anumang organization," he said.

(We ask for support and prayers and let us not let the issue die down once the cases are filed because this is not just for my brother, this is for future cadets who want to enter the PMA, PNPA (Philippine National Police Academy) or any organization.)

He added that his family was not the only victim in the incident. The families of those involved in the crime and even PMA officials whose careers are on the line are also victims.

"Ang dami naming biktima para sa kalokohan ng iilan," he said.

(So many became victims for the folly of a few.)
