MANILA — The Bureau of Customs on Tuesday started using 6 additional x-ray machines to curb the smuggling of illegal goods and narcotics into the country.

The US-made machines can scan 120 containers per hour and analyze whether the materials inside are organic or synthetic, said the BOC X-ray Inspection Project.

Of the 6 machines, 2 were installed at the Port of Manila, 2 at the Manila International Container Port and one each at the ports in the cities of Davao and Cebu.

The BOC earlier came under fire after its inspections failed to bar the entry of multibillion-peso shabu shipments into the country, including a P6.4-billion drug haul in 2017 and 4 magnetic lifters believed to contain some P11 billion in drugs the following year.
