MANILA - The famous Spanish colonial structures of Vigan City in Ilocos Sur were not spared by the onslaught of typhoon Ompong over the weekend.

Ompong, the strongest typhoon to hit the country so far this year, brought heavy rains and strong winds that ripped the roofs and windows of the historic structures.

Vigan City is included in UNESCO's world heritage list, which describes it as "the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia."

Typhoon Ompong made landfall in Cagayan last Saturday triggering floods and landslides before leaving at least 25 people dead in different parts of Luzon, official reports say.--report from Bryan R. Realgo, ABS-CBN News
