MANILA - Almost 300 passengers were stranded in ports in the Bicol area as typhoon 'Maring' plowed through Luzon, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tuesday.

Some 296 passengers were stranded in the ports, along with 46 rolling cargos, 16 vessels, and 2 motorbancas, said NDRRMC Spokesperson Mina Marasigan.

In a briefing before noon, Marasigan said rescuers saved 22 passengers of a DLTB bus stranded on a flooded road in Pitogo, Quezon province.

The driver of an SUV owned by a Camarines Sur town mayor was also rescued, said Marasigan. The mayor is currently seeking shelter in Brgy. Ilaya in Pitogo.

Marasigan also reported that there had been landslides in the towns of Rizal and Nasugbu, Batangas and rising water levels in Sta. Cruz, Marinduque because of the tropical depression.

Flashfloods were also experienced in parts of Metro Manila, Camarines Norte, Quezon, Laguna, Rizal, and Batangas.

The NDRRMC is coordinating with local government units for the evacuation of residents in parts of Quezon, Laguna, Rizal, and Batangas, said Marasigan.

'Maring' is expected to leave land on Wednesday morning and exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Thursday, she said.
