ILOILO CITY—Fire razed 30 houses in two barangays in Mandurriao, Iloilo Thursday morning.
From Sitio Mainuswagon, Barangay Bolilao, the fire spread to houses in neighboring village Sitio Kanipaan, Barangay Bakhaw.
Smoke billowing on top of houses was seen from a distance past 11 a.m.
The Bureau of Fire Protection declared the incident under control after almost an hour.
Most of the houses engulfed by the blaze were made of light materials. The fire spread easily amid strong winds.
Some residents forcibly destroyed their fences so that firemen could penetrate the area.
Some fetched water from a nearby source to prevent the fire from spreading. Even policemen helped out to prevent the fire from ravaging the rest of the houses.
“There is just one firetruck in this area. The fire spread easily. On the other side, the fire was already huge,” said Police Insp. Joel Bulfa who lived in the area.
Medical teams said they attended to three individuals who experienced difficulty breathing after inhaling smoke.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
