MANILA - A low pressure area and typhoon are moving closer to the country, threatening to bring rains and enhance the habagat or southwest monsoon, the state weather bureau said Thursday.

Spotted 1,000 kilometers east of Guiuan , Eastern Samar, the LPA is unlikely to become a storm but is moving towards Visayas. It will bring rains over the central islands and Mindanao, said PAGASA meteorologist Gener Quitlong in a Facebook broadcast.

Typhoon Jebi, meanwhile, was still outside the Philippine area of responsibility at 3,030 kilometers east of northern Luzon. It was packing top sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour and 170 kph gusts, Quitlong said.

If Jebi continues moving west northwest at 20 kph, it may enter PAR on Sunday or Monday, said the weather forecaster.

Although it is not expected to hit land, the typhoon is building strength and may boost the habagat, Quitlong warned as he urged the public to monitor updates on Jebi.

For now, the habagat will bring cloudy skies and scattered rains over Batanes and Babuyan, said PAGASA.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country meanwhile, may experience localized thunderstorms, the weather agency added.
