MANILA—Departing overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) whose flights were affected by the runway accident at Ninoy Aquino International Airport received a P5,000 financial assistance on Wednesday.

Dozens of migrant workers lined up at the information counter of NAIA Terminal 1 to claim the money from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The DFA said the money is meant to help ease the financial burden that comes with the delayed flights of OFWs.

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded over the weekend after a Xiamen Airlines Boeing 737 overshot NAIA's only runway on August 16.

The incident paralyzed operations at the country's main airport for nearly 2 days and forced the cancellation of at least 200 flights. Philippine authorities are investigating the incident.

Migrant workers who wish to claim the financial assistance should present their airline ticket showing the original date of departure, the reissued ticket showing the new date of departure, their employment contract, and overseas employment certificate.

Aside from NAIA, affected OFWs in the country can also claim the financial assistance from the Office of Migrant Workers Affairs on the 3rd floor of the DFA Building in Roxas Boulevard.

The said offices will accommodate claimants until Friday, August 24.
