MANILA — The local government of Quezon City announced Monday it is imposing a new ban on the sale, distribution, and consumption of alcohol from August 4 until August 18, or the period when Metro Manila will be placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ).

The executive order said consumption of any alcoholic beverages shall only be allowed within private residences.

Any person, entity, or establishment found to be in violation of the provisions of this order will be penalized, the order read.

President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday said he would place the virus epicenter Metro Manila along with Cavite, Laguna, Rizal and Bulacan on MECQ following the appeal of medical workers for a "time out" amid the surge in COVID-19 cases.
