CEBU CITY - An inmate of the Cebu City Jail has accused jail guards of maltreatment, which allegedly prompted him to escape.

Marvin Gimpeso bolted from the Cebu City Jail early Monday morning. He was arrested and brought back to jail Tuesday.

When interrogated, Gimpeso said he escaped because the jail guards were mauling him and not giving him the right kind of food.

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) launched an investigation on Gimpeso's claim. They visited him in jail Wednesday, wherein he was asked questions about his complaint.

The CHR will also talk to other inmates to ask them whether they have the same experience.

Jail Superintendent Arnel Peralta, meanwhile, denied Gimpeso's claims. He expressed confidence that there was no human rights violation inside the jail.
