MANILA -- A Jordanian man who allegedly worked for the late Osama Bin Laden’s brother-in-law was arrested in Mindanao last month, the Bureau of Immigration said Thursday.

Mahmoud Afif Abdeljalil, 51, is set to be deported following his capture in Zamboanga City on July 4 for unlawfully staying in the country, according to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente.

The bureau did not give a date for the suspect's deportation.

Authorities said it monitored Abdeljalil after he and an Algerian companion were stopped at a military checkpoint in Zamboanga in August 2018.

The suspect was arrested and deported in 2003 for having an expired visa and "involvement in clandestine terrorist activities as a Palestinian under the name Mahmood Afif," the bureau said.

It said Abdeljalil served as the point man of Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, a Saudi businessman and Bin Laden’s brother-in-law, in managing several charity organizations that funneled money to Al Qaeda and the Abu Sayyaf group.

According to the bureau, authorities claimed that even after Khalifa was killed in 2007, Abdeljalil continued to extend financial support to the Abu Sayyaf using fronts such as mosques and Madrasah schools that he built in the southern Philippines that supposedly received funding from Al Qaeda.
