MANILA—A newborn baby and a 10-month-old infant were among the 8 people who died in a series of interconnected earthquakes that shook Batanes on Saturday.

Dan Esdicul, head of Batanes' provincial disaster mitigation office, told radio DZMM on Sunday that Haisley Chette Naquita, 5 days old, was among those who perished.

The others who died were: Eva Valiente, 19; her daughter, Fiona Valiente, 10 months old; Eva's sister, Mary Ros Valiente, 13; Genward Mina, 31; Faustina Caan, around 70 years old; Teresita Gulaga, 76; and Tito Asa, 89.

Five of them were buried immediately with the consent of their families, as no formaldehyde, a chemical used for embalming, was immediately available.
