MANILA—A newborn baby and a 10-month-old infant were among the 8 people who died in a series of interconnected earthquakes that shook Batanes on Saturday.

Dan Esdicul, head of Batanes' provincial disaster mitigation office, told radio DZMM on Sunday that Haisley Chette Naquita, 5 days old, was among those who perished.

The others who died were: Eva Valiente, 19; her daughter, Fiona Valiente, 10 months old; Eva's sister, Mary Ros Valiente, 13; Genward Mina, 31; Faustina Caan, around 70 years old; Teresita Gulaga, 76; and Tito Asa, 89.

All of them died in Itbayat town, the area worst hit by the tremors.

Five of them were buried immediately with the consent of their families, as no formaldehyde, a chemical used for embalming, was immediately available.

The Phivolcs said two earthquakes in the magnitude-5 range hit the northern islands on Saturday, apart from a number of aftershocks.

As of posting time, 8 people were dead and 100 others injured as a result of the tremors.
