MANILA (UPDATE) — A series of quakes struck Batanes on Saturday morning, leaving several houses damaged and at least 8 people dead, authorities said.

A 5.4-magnitude temblor struck at 4:16 a.m., and then a 3.2 magnitude quake at 5 a.m. A 5.9-magnitude quake then struck at 7:38 a.m., the "main shock," said Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum.

A downpour also posed a challenge for some residents hours after the quake forced them to evacuate.

Some residents took refuge under tents as rain poured in one plaza.

Among those also damaged by the quake is a portion of the Itbayat Church.
