"The C.37 or the Lambda variant is a variant of interest (VOI) that has become the dominant variant in Peru and has been detected in about 30 countries primarily in Latin America," ani Vergeire.

"It contains a number of mutations in the spike region, including the L452Q mutation in the same region as the L452R mutation of the Delta variant," dagdag niya.

"It has the tremendous possibility to attack and infect human cells, particularly the lungs," ani Dr. Tony Leachon, dating adviser ng National Task Force Against COVID-19.

Dagdag pa niya: "It might dodge the antibodies created by the vaccines. It may actually be more dangerous because of the L425Q spike protein."

"If we see that the virus is more transmissible, causing more severe disease or is resistant or resilient to the currently available vaccines, then we would decide to call it a variant of concern," ani WHO Representative to the Philippines Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe.

"Rest assured that this variant is continuously being monitored by our experts. Currently, there is no evidence that it is more deadly compared to other VOIs or VOCs. Moreover, of the 7,000+ samples sequenced locally, we still have not detected the Lambda variant," ani Vergeire.
