MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law declaring April 27 as Lapu-Lapu Day in honor of the Filipino hero.

Duterte signed Republic Act 11040 on June 29 declaring April 27 of every year as a special working public holiday throughout the country and a special non-working holiday in the city of Lapu-Lapu in Cebu province.

Duterte signed the law “to commemorate the victory of Lapu-Lapu and his men over the Spaniards led by Ferdinand Magellan in the historic battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521.”

Last year, he made a proclamation to declare the day in honor of Lapu-Lapu, among the country's earliest heroes.

The President has many times expressed his admiration for Lapu-Lapu. He had in fact named an award after the hero to honor individuals who advance government initiatives, including its campaign against illegal drugs.
