MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has signed an executive order creating an award for individuals who will advance government initiatives, including its campaign against illegal drugs.
"The President has pursued a wide array of campaigns and advocacies on various issues, such as suppression of illegal drugs and illegal gambling, the protection of the environment, and eradication of graft and corruption," read EO 17, which was signed April 7 and released Monday.
"The efforts and sacrifices of the officials and personnel of the government and private citizens in furtherance of the campaign or advocacy of the President deserve recognition," the order added.
The Order of the Lapu-Lapu, the EO said, shall comprise 3 medals.
The Lapu-Lapu Medal will be given to individuals who have "contributed significantly" to the success of a campaign; the Kalasag Medal will be given to those who lost lives or property in serving an advocacy; and the Kampilan Medal will be conferred to those who were seriously injured while participating in a government initiative.
The President shall confer the Order of Lapu-Lapu based on the recommendation of a committee composed of a chairman from the Office of the Executive Secretary and representatives from the Presidential Management Staff.
The award may also be conferred posthumously and received by an awardee's relatives.
Funds for the award will be drawn from the Office of the President, the EO said. -- With a report from Dexter Ganibe, DZMM
