Fermin Soto, owner of Liberty-5, said the Coast Guard found that the ship's pilot house was severely damaged, adding this must have been where the cargo hit the small vessel.

The Liberty-5 was on its way to the Navotas fish port, while the Vienna Wood was bound for Australia from Subic, Zambales when the incident happened.
