MANILA - Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday slammed President Rodrigo Duterte's directive to the police to round up loiterers (tambay) on the streets.

Robredo also urged community leaders and lawyers to be vigilant and to help each other to prevent abuses of human rights during tambay sweeps, which she calls "anti-poor."

“Para kasing binibigyan ng lisensya iyong mga law enforcement na opisyal na mang-abuso. Nakita na natin itong danger nito noong kasagsagan ng anti-drug war. Inuulit na naman natin ngayon,” she said in her radio program.

Robredo also noted that vagrancy has been decriminalized.

President Duterte on June 14 called loiterers "potential trouble for the public" and directed the police to round up tambays or night idlers on the streets.

But last Friday, he denied giving the directive, saying loitering is not crime.

“Hindi nakakatulong iyong paiba-ibang statement kasi lalong nagbibigay ng kalituhan,” Robredo said.
