ABS-CBN chairman emeritus Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III appeared at a congressional hearing on the network’s franchise to answer questions on his citizenship. Here are the stories making the headlines on ANC today:
Non-issue
Some congressmen were intent to hammer and belabor the point in Wednesday’s congressional hearing on the ABS-CBN franchise. But the Department of Justice (DOJ) explained that Gabby Lopez is a Filipino citizen since birth, having been born to a Filipino father in the US. This issue is something that anyone with a cursory knowledge of the law will understand. Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman said this is a non-issue. Meanwhile, Kabayan party-list Rep. Ron Salo is pushing for strict regulations for a new network franchise. Some of these regulations border on prior restraint, dictates on content and could be violate the Constitution. Were the same regulations included in other broadcast franchises?

Capricious?
Foreign Affairs Sec. Teodoro Locsin Jr. said the Philippines will continue its strong military partnership with the United States with the suspension of termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). Defense Sec. Delfin Lorenzana said President Duterte believes the abrogation of the VFA is untimely given the pandemic. Let’s remember that the revocation of the visa of Sen. Ronald dela Rosa, a close ally of the president, precipitated the abrogation of the VFA. Was the abrogation then a capricious act on the president’s part?

Terrorized by anti-terror bill
Congress approved the anti-terror bill despite criticisms and as the country fights a pandemic. Is this what the country needs while COVID-19 takes more lives? Vice President Leni Robredo came out with a critique of the bill. Is the bill, she asked, meant to curb terrorism or criticism of the government?

Better than nothing
While seemingly ignoring inadequate transportation that left many commuters frustrated, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) lamented that commuters “forgot” quarantine rules during the GCQ. Meanwhile, a bicycle group condemned the MMDA’s threat to file charges and impose fines on them for putting up an improvised bike lane on Commonwealth Ave. They argued that the bike lane to protect cyclists is better than no action from government.
