MANILA - A Cebu town mayor was wounded after a gun accidentally fired inside his vehicle late Wednesday, police said.

Daanbantayan Mayor Vicente Loot, who was shot in the leg, is being treated at a hospital, police said.

Loot said he was on the way home from attending a wake when the incident happened.

"I transferred to the vehicle my security is riding and sat where he vacated. It's dark and I feel I sat on something. I reached down using my left hand para kapain... baril pala. Doon pumutok," he told ABS-CBN News.

Loot said the injury was not serious as the bullet did not hit his nerves or bones.

The mayor, a former police officer, survived an ambush attempt earlier this month when armed men fired on his vehicle.

President Rodrigo Duterte had also accused Loot of involvement in the illegal drug trade.
