MANILA - Most candidates endorsed by President Rodrigo Duterte fared well during the midterm elections, but Pompee La Viña was not as lucky.

The President's former "chief social media strategist" during the 2016 campaign failed to secure the mayoralty seat in Cagayan De Oro City.

Reelectionist mayor Oscar Moreno, who ran under the administration ticket PDP-Laban, defeated La Viña by a wide margin of 68,000 votes.

La Viña ran under the Padayon Pilipino party, which is allied with the Sara Duterte-Carpio led party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago.

Before seeking an elective post, La Viña was appointed as Social Security System (SSS) commissioner after the 2016 polls.

His appointment was not renewed amid allegations of misusing taxpayers' money, such as the P26-million budget for a social media project in the government agency, which he had denied.

La Viña then went on to serve as undersecretary at the Department of Tourism (DOT).

He was accused of leaking an audit report that questioned the placement of ads in the television show of then-Secretary Wanda Teo's brothers. He denied the allegation, with Teo backing him up.

He was later transferred as undersecretary in the Department of Agriculture (DA).
