Workers of the DPWH began demolishing a kilometer-long concrete fence owned by a resort in Boracay Island. The agency is conducting clearing operations before the island's rehabilitation starts.

The Department of Public Works and Highways on Wednesday began demolishing a kilometer-long concrete fence owned by a big resort on the island.

The fence encroached the 12-meter road right of way in Barangay Yapak.

The DPWH aims to complete the clearing operation for the remaining two weeks before the rehabilitation starts.

Of the 5.6 kilometer stretch of main and circumferential roads in the island, almost 50 percent of road sections were already cleared according to DPWH Asstistant Regional Director Al Fruto.

The agency was overwhelmed by the cooperation of different establishments that voluntarily demolished their structures.

A rehabilitation fund amounting to P490 million will be allocated for the construction of road networks in the island.

Last month, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the total closure of Boracay Island for 6 months to give way to its rehabilitation.
