MANILA (UPDATE) - The Senate will give honors to the late Sen. Tessie Aquino-Oreta through a resolution on Monday, Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said.

Given continuing measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease, the Senate will pass a resolution for Aquino-Oreta during the chamber's hybrid session on May 18 in lieu of traditional rites at the Senate session hall in Pasay City.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III, who had worked alongside Aquino-Oreta at the Senate, expressed sadness for a friend's passing.

"My family and I are so saddened by her demise," the Senate President said.

"She was very close to me and Sec. Greg," he said, referring to Department of Information and Communications Technology Secretary Gringo Honasan, who was a former senator.

Sotto said his wife, actress Helen Gamboa, was also "devastated" by Aquino-Oreta's passing.

"Helen, being a relative of theirs, is devastated by her passing. She has not stopped crying since we were told the news last night," he said.

Sen. Richard Gordon and his wife Kate, who were also "very close" to Aquino-Oreta, mourned the late lawmaker's death.

"Not only did we share the same passion for promoting the welfare of our country’s teachers because of our belief that having good teachers is the key to a better future for our country, but Tessie was also a very close friend to us," Gordon said in a tweet.

"The country lost a dedicated public servant who was also an advocate of education and employment... She will always be remembered for the great legacy she left behind," he said.

Aquino-Oreta, an aunt of former president Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and sister of slain martial law opposition figure senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., passed away Thursday night for a still undisclosed cause. She was 75.

Aquino-Oreta served in the 11th Congress, where she chaired the Senate Committee on Education.

Some of her bills that were signed into law include the Early Childhood Care and Development Act, the Solo Parent Act, the Solid Waste Management Act, the Philippine High School System Act, and the Clean Air Act, among others.
