MANILA - The Department of Education (DepEd) said Tuesday it has suspended the annual interschool sports tournament Palarong Pambansa and other events that draw large crowds as a precaution against the spread of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

"'Yong ating usual activities na napaka-exciting, nakakatuwa, na lahat, buong bansa nakikisali talaga, national events ay pansamantalang kina-cancel natin," Education Secretary Leonor Briones said in a virtual press briefing.

DepEd earlier announced it would resume classes nationwide in August, instead of the usual class opening in June, as the outbreak continues.
