MANILA - The Department of Education (DepEd) said Tuesday it has suspended the annual interschool sports tournament Palarong Pambansa and other events that draw large crowds as a precaution against the spread of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

"'Yong ating usual activities na napaka-exciting, nakakatuwa, na lahat, buong bansa nakikisali talaga, national events ay pansamantalang kina-cancel natin," Education Secretary Leonor Briones said in a virtual press briefing.

(Our usual activites that are exciting, fun, that the entire country participates in, these national events are canceled for now.)

Other DepEd affairs that are indefinitely suspended include talent contests, science and job fairs, and campus journalism events, said Briones.

DepEd earlier announced it would resume classes nationwide in August, instead of the usual class opening in June, as the outbreak continues.

Mass gatherings are prohibited to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which has infected 9,485 in the Philippines as of Monday.
