MANILA (UPDATE) — The Philippines on Monday announced the highest number of recovered patients in a day from COVID-19 at 101, as the number of total cases reach 9,485.

The Department of Health in its bulletin said a total of 1,315 patients have recovered from the disease that originated in China.

“Kasama po sa mga naitalang naka-recover ay ang mga pasyenteng na-confine, at mga pasyenteng may mga positive mild at asymptomatic cases na naka-recover mula sa kanilang self-isolation at home quarantine,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said during a televised briefing.

(Included in the tally of recoveries are patients who were confined, and patients who were positive but were considered mild and asymptomatic cases and have recovered from their self-isolation and home quarantine.)

The agency reported 262 new cases, of which majority are from the National Capital Region (122 patients or 47 percent) while the rest are from the Central Visayas (88 or 33 percent) and other regions (57 or 20 percent).

According to ABS-CBN Data Analytics, Cebu and the rest of Central Visayas have joined the National Capital Region in topping the list of areas with the most COVID-19 cases.

A substantial number of COVID-19 cases were found in Cebu City Jail and another cluster in the city's Sitio Zapatera.

Meanwhile, the ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group noted that 7 provinces that had confirmed COVID-19 cases are now COVID-free after the patients have recovered. These are Abra, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Davao Oriental, Ilocos Sur, Maguindanao, and Northern Samar.

The DOH also reported 16 new COVID-related deaths, bringing the total death toll to 623.

Since last month, the number of total recovered patients surpassed the total number of fatalities as the DOH included in the former those who recovered after undergoing home quarantine. Before that, only those being discharged by hospitals were counted.

Meanwhile, of the 9,223 confirmed cases announced on Sunday, 7,402 were considered “active cases” or still infected with COVID-19.

Of those, 84.1% have mild symptoms, 0.8% are severe cases and 0.35% are critical cases.
