MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday said the “no wang-wang (siren)” policy of former president Benigno Aquino III would stay.

This as Duterte said he has received reports of a resurgence of politicians using sirens on the road to bypass traffic.

“Sabi nila bumabalik ang siren. There’s an order, kay Aquino pa ‘yan. I’d like to maintain that policy,” Duterte said in a speech during the distribution of land titles to land reform beneficiaries in Mulanay, Quezon.

It was Aquino who, upon assuming office in 2010, enforced the anti-siren policy as his government sought to rid the Philippines of a “wang-wang” mentality.

Aquino had said the ban on the unauthorized use of blaring sirens showed that the government was serious in cracking down on an attitude of entitlement among corrupt officials.
