MANILA -- Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano said Filipino fishermen who were allegedly harassed by China, confirmed to him that the ship belonged to the Chinese Navy and not its Coast Guard.

Speaking to ANC on Sunday, Alejano said he met with the local fishermen on Saturday to discuss the alleged harassment that happened in Union Bank.

"The fishermen confirmed that that was the Navy the ship they saw in Union Bank," Alejano said, noting that he showed a photo of a Chinese Navy ship to the fishermen.

The lawmaker explained that the confirmation of the fishermen was "alarming" since Navy ships are usually used for war.

"The Navy is used in war fighting so it could be an act of war against another country if you’re using gray ship. That is why we’re very careful in deploying our forces such as Coast Guard," he said.

An earlier report said a group of Filipino fishermen have accused China's Coast Guard of shooting at their vessel in disputed South China Sea waters.

Philippine officials said they were investigating the reported attack on the Princess Johann boat, which the crew said occurred near a Chinese-occupied section of the Spratly archipelago on March 27.

Alejano added that personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) even chided the fishermen on why they told the media of the incident first before the Coast Guard.

He said the fishermen told him that they did not know what to do.

Alejano said the alleged incident if confirmed should be a "cause of concern" because China is now firing shots.

"This time around their firing their rifles... Very unfortunate considering the fact that we're supposed to have a warmer and closer relationship with China," he said. -- with a report from Agence France Presse
