MANILA--The Cebu City government recorded 139 new cases of COVID-19, marking the highest one-day jump since infections were first recorded, Mayor Edgardo Labella said Wednesday.

Of that number, 123 originated at city jail, Labella said.

Last week, an inmate at the Cebu City Jail who died was later confirmed to have caught the virus.

The city has implemented stricter measures inside the city jail, barring items from coming through the facility.

Of the new COVID-19 cases, 9 came from Barangay Labangon and 3 from Barangay Luz. Both barangays have been placed under total lockdown.

Barangays Duljo-Fatima and Inayawan also recorded 1 new case each. A personnel from the city health department also contracted COVID-19.

Massive testing and contact tracing are now being done to arrest the spread of COVID-19.

To date, the total coronavirus infections in the city are at 312. -- Report from Annie Perez, ABS-CBN News
